From Baby Boomers to Millennials and Beyond: Why Dumb and Stupid Are Surprisingly Timeless

Every generation thinks the generation after them is getting worse.

Baby Boomers look at younger people and wonder how they survive without knowing basic life skills. Younger generations look back and wonder how anyone survived before smartphones, the internet, and instant answers.

The funny part is that everyone thinks they are the smart ones. Everyone is also wrong.

In Windgap: Stories and Observations of Bullsh*tters, Julius Kabana takes a humorous approach to one of humanity’s greatest traditions: doing ridiculous things while being completely convinced we know what we are doing.

Technology changes but human behavior does not.

Every Generation Has Its Own Kind of Dumb & Stupid

There is a difference between dumb and stupid.

Dumb usually means you do not know something. You were never taught. You never experienced it. You simply missed the information.

Stupid is different. Stupid is having the answer right in front of you and still finding a way to make the wrong choice. Surprisingly enough, every generation has done both.

People in the past made questionable decisions without smartphones, Google, or instant access to information. Today, people can find almost any answer in seconds and still make questionable decisions anyway. Honestly, that is dumb and stupid.

The Technology Changes, the Bullshit Stays the Same

One of the funniest parts of Windgap is Julius Kabana’s take on the technology gap between generations. When he explains to his children that there was a time before cell phones, computers, texting, and the internet, they struggle to understand how people survived without them.

To younger generations, a world without smartphones sounds impossible. To older generations, depending on a phone for everything sounds just as strange. Both sides have a point.

A smartphone can help you spend hours watching video porn you never plan to watch.

The device is smart. The person using it becomes dumber.

Everyone Eventually Becomes the Person They Mock

The best part about generational arguments is that nobody wins. To younger generations, a world without smartphones sounds impossible. To older generations, a smartphone in their hands makes them nauseous to their stomach and impossible to use. Both sides have a point.

Young people laugh at older people for struggling with technology. Then those same young people get older and complain about whatever comes next. It happens every time.

Why Dumb and Stupid Will Always Be Funny

The reason Windgap works across generations is because Julius Kabana is not really making fun of one group of people.

He is making fun of all of us.

Everyone has been confidently wrong. Everyone has made a bad decision. Everyone has looked at someone else and thought, “What the hell are they doing?”

And at some point, someone has probably looked at us and thought the same thing.

The technology will keep changing. The world will keep moving forward.

But people will always find new and creative ways to be dumb.

And honestly, that might be the one thing we can all agree on.
